Whether you are a student or work long hours at a job, it can be easy to forget the outdoor gems Tallahassee has to offer. It is important to set aside time for yourself and your wellbeing. Being outside and enjoying the sun and scenery is a great way to unplug and invest in self care. There’s quite a few parks and attractions in Tallahassee, but these are just some of my favorites as a senior at FSU in my fourth year living here!
Lake Ella & Black Dog Cafe
Lake Ella is somewhere you can take a quiet stroll, watch ducks, and enjoy the peace the lake has to offer. It has a trail that is roughly half a mile long. A trip here isn’t complete without stopping at Black Dog Cafe for your favorite cup of coffee first. The small business is woman-owned, established in 1997, and offers plenty of outdoor seating with the relaxing views of Lake Ella.
Cascades Park
Cascades Park is 24 acres of outdoor bliss and pieces of Tallahassee history. Located near the capital building, you are able to stroll along the many trails and see sights such as the Smokey Hollow Commemoration and the Prime Meridian Marker set in 1824. The park is also home to The Edison, a local restaurant in a restored 1920s power plant. If you are a fan of history and the outdoors, Cascades Park is for you.
JR Alford Greenway
Being one of Tallahassee’s most popular parks, JR Alford Greenway welcomes nature lovers of all kinds with its 17 miles of trails. They allow activities such as biking, running, hiking, dog walking, and even horseback riding. It is home to gorgeous views, various trees and greenery, and wildlife like birds and deer. With amazing views and plenty of room for activity, JR Alford Greenway is a must for outdoor fanatics.
Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park
Alfred B. Maclay Gardens is a Florida State Park established in 1953. It is rich in history as well as its various botanical gardens. Peak blooming season is said to be January 1 through April 30 for the most breathtaking views of the flowers. Admission is charged per vehicle, and there is a small additional fee to enter the gardens. The state park is also open for various outdoor activities (biking, fishing, hiking, paddling, swimming, etc.) as well as gatherings and weddings and even tours of what the park has to offer. Alfred B. Maclay Gardens has something for everyone and it is very easy to find your slice of outdoor whimsy here.
FSU Lakefront Park
Located on Lake Bradford and only 4 miles away from Florida State campus, FSU Lakefront Park is home to plenty of outdoor fun (with discounts for FSU students!). Enjoy the lakeside and get some energy out in activities such as kayaking, paddle-boarding, beach volleyball, rock climbing, etc. For those who love physical activity as a wellness outlet, and maybe a nice afternoon nap after being in the sun all day, FSU Lakefront park is for you. The park also offers pavilions and charcoal grills for rental for those who would rather relax in the shade and take in the views of the lake.
I know when I am overwhelmed, stressed, or anxious, being outside and getting fresh air alleviates some of those negative feelings. It can be hard to get out of the enduring work and/or school loop and very easy to forget what all Tallahassee has to offer. This city is home to some beautiful sights that can foster outdoor wellness. I highly recommend setting aside time to visit some of these to get your dose of vitamin D and mental health recovery!
