Hola!

My name is Dr. Marangelie Velez (Mara), and I’m excited that you’re here! Starting therapy can feel overwhelming, whether it’s your first experience with counseling or you’re returning after some time away. My hope is that this introduction helps you get a sense of who I am, what I value as a therapist, and what it might be like to work together.

Who I Am

I am a Registered Marriage & Family Therapist Intern (RMFTI), National Certified Counselor (NCC), and Certified Relationship Educator (PREP). I earned my Ph.D. in Counselor Education from the University of Central Florida and currently serve as an Assistant Teaching Professor at Florida State University, where I teach and mentor future counselors.

My clinical and research experiences have allowed me to work with individuals, couples, families, adolescents, and young adults from diverse backgrounds. I have a particular passion for supporting clients who are navigating relationship challenges, family conflict, anxiety, life transitions, identity development, acculturative stress, and the unique experiences that often come with being a first-generation college student or member of an immigrant family. As both a counselor educator and clinician, I value creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, and empowered to grow.

My Approach to Therapy

I believe that every person’s story is unique, which means therapy should never be a one-size-fits-all experience. My approach is collaborative, culturally responsive, and grounded in genuine curiosity about who you are and what matters most to you.

Drawing from my training in family systems, relationship education, multicultural counseling, and evidence-based counseling practices, I help clients explore the patterns, relationships, and experiences that may be influencing their current challenges. I strive to create a balance between compassion and accountability—offering support while also helping clients make meaningful changes aligned with their goals.

I also believe that humor, authenticity, and a strong therapeutic relationship can be powerful tools in the counseling process. Therapy isn't about being “fixed”; it’s about developing greater awareness, building skills, and creating the life and relationships you want.

Who I Work With

I enjoy working with adolescents, young adults, adults, couples, and families, and many of my clients seek support for concerns related to:

  • Anxiety and stress

  • Relationship and communication difficulties

  • Life transitions

  • Identity development

  • Family conflict

  • Acculturative stress and multicultural concerns

  • First-generation experiences

  • Goal setting and personal growth

As a bilingual clinician, I am also able to provide services in both English and Spanish. I especially enjoy working with individuals and families from diverse cultural backgrounds and helping clients navigate the intersections of culture, identity, relationships, and mental health.

Outside of the Office

When I’m not teaching or meeting with clients, you can usually find me planning my next trip, attending a live music event, or curling up with a good book. I also love exploring new cuisines and believe some of life’s best conversations happen around a great meal shared with friends and family!

What to Expect When You Reach Out

Taking the first step toward therapy can feel intimidating, and I understand the courage it takes to reach out. My goal is to make the process as comfortable and approachable as possible. During our initial conversations, we'll discuss what brings you to therapy, answer any questions you may have, and determine whether we're a good fit for working together.

If we decide to move forward, we'll work collaboratively to identify your goals and create a path that feels meaningful and achievable for you. Whether you're facing a specific challenge or simply looking to better understand yourself, I would be honored to be part of your journey.

I look forward to connecting with you!

Kindly,

Marangelie Velez, PhD, NCC, RMFTI (She/Her/Ella)
